A Walk In Mascot Memorial Park

The sun came out today for the first time in about a week! I realize it’s winter here in Australia, and rain and cool weather are the norm this time of year, but man oh man have I missed the warmth and vibrance that the sunshine brings. It’s an instant mood booster and makes me just want to be outside. So this morning I took a walk. After walking past several blocks of tall, glassy office and apartment buildings, I entered a more lived-in part of town. The homes were older and mostly made of brick. Shortly thereafter, I arrived here. A small-ish, very well-kept city park full of beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers. It was completely empty, with the exception of an older man cleaning up the fallen leaves. This peaceful place is called Mascot Memorial Park, and it is home to a monument commemorating those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War I. Past the garden area of the park there’s a playground and tennis courts. It’s very tranquil and a really great spot to just relax, clear your head, and enjoy nature.

Walking through here was a wonderful way start to my day. 💕

French Toast By Bondi Beach

Breakfast is my favorite meal. It’s the only one that offers both sweet or savory fare as the main dish. You can have steak, pastry, or both, and not only is it perfectly acceptable, it’s the standard (well… depending on the country you’re in). I tend to eat dessert first at dinner because I like to make sure I have room for the sugary goodness that is cake. Or ice cream. Or mousse. Or custard. You get my drift. Breakfast makes it easy for me.

This morning I woke up in the mood for something sweet and filling. The last few days I’ve tried to eat a little cleaner and have stuck to eggs and veggies. But today… Today I needed to satisfy my sweet tooth. I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted, but I was on the hunt.

It’s my first time in Sydney and I’m not familiar with what’s what, so I decided to wander the streets near where I’m staying until I found a place that looked good. It didn’t take me long to find The Nine. It’s a small, inviting cafe with only a few tables and stools. But it’s not your standard cafe. Sure, they serve a variety of coffee and tea beverages and a few baked goods as well, but they also have a seasonal menu that offers several all-day breakfast options, fresh juices, and healthy food bowls.

I was feeling something sweet, so I chose the brioche french toast and a cappuccino (I don’t function well without coffee). It was phenomenal. The french toast was cooked perfectly; it was soft and crispy at the same time. The toast topped with mounds of fresh ricotta cheese and sprinklings of toasted hazelnuts and tiny pieces of candied salted caramel. There was a smear of what tasted like warm, creamy hazelnut butter and wedges of juicy, lightly spiced pears on the plate as well. The finishing touch was the light honey drizzle. It looked beautiful and tasted even better. The combination of ingredients goes together splendidly. While each one tasted great on its own, putting them all on the fork truly created an incredible bite. The cappuccino was excellent as well. I loved the sprinkle of chocolate, and the milk, foam, coffee ratio was just right (all equal parts 😉).

The one regret I have about going to The Nine is that I went alone. There were other offerings I really wanted to try and would have if I’d had someone else to split them with. Most, if not all, the food is organic. There are also quite a few healthy options on the menu, AND they offer to modify items if you have food allergies. If you’re in The Bondi Beach area of Sydney and are looking for a good breakfast, definitely give The Nine a try. They are only open for breakfast and lunch with service starting at 7 am on weekdays and 8 am on weekends.
